    Description

Original U.S. Half-Sheet Poster (22x28) Rolled Fine to Very Fine Condition
Universal Pictures Original U.S. Half-Sheet Poster (22x28) for the Roy William Neill directed Sherlock Homes mystery SHERLOCK HOLMES FACES DEATH (1943). The film stars Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. Neill had just directed FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN (1942) and he brought to this project the feel of the Universal horror films. There have been several Sherlocks in the movies and a few good ones too, but Holmes fans always seem to demonstrate their love for Basil Rathbone. Perhaps it was his somewhat aristocratic, often autocratic, and usually didactic personality as an actor that melded so well with personality of Holmes from the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Rathbone had been a star at MGM, appearing in some important films there, including ANNA KARENINA with Garbo and the vicious Mr. Murdstone in DAVID COPPERFIELD. He also made films at Warner Bros including CAPTAIN BLOOD in 1935 and THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD in 1938. Among the Sherlock Holmes poster from Universal few have a better portrait of Holmes and Dr. Watson than this one. SHERLOCK HOLMES FACES DEATH was, unlike some of the prior films, actually a return to the Conan Doyle canon, having been adapted from a short story "The Musgrave Ritual". Rathbone had a long and successful career. But it is as Sherlock Holmes (he played the sleuth in fifteen films) that he is most remembered. SHERLOCK HOLMES FACES DEATH may have been a particularly appropriate title for this movie, which was made squarely in the middle of World War II. Rathbone's career extended until his death in 1967. This poster was never folded, but does show, of course, some signs of age and general use. We have graded it as fine to very fine. MovieArt Original Film Posters in Austin, Texas guarantees that this poster is an authentic U.S. half-sheet poster for this film. MovieArt does not sell reproductions.
