Description
Dakar, SENEGAL - Chamber of Commerce - French West Africa - Afrique Occidentale: Dakar is the capital and largest city of Senegal. It is located on the Cap-Vert Peninsula on the Atlantic coast and is the westernmost city in the Old World and on the African mainland. Its position, on the western edge of Africa, is an advantageous departure point for trans-Atlantic and European trade; this fact aided its growth into a major regional port. According to December 31, 2005 official estimates, the city of Dakar proper has a population of 1,030,594, whereas the population of the Dakar metropolitan area is estimated at 2.45 million people. Dakar is a major administrative center, home to the Senegal National Assembly and the Presidential Palace. This White Border Era (1915-30) postcard is of the Chamber of Commerce in Dakar when the area was part of French West Africa. French West Africa (French: Afrique Occidentale Française, AOF) was a federation of eight French colonial territories in Africa: Mauritania, Senegal, French Sudan (now Mali), French Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso), Dahomey (now Benin) and Niger. The capital of the federation was Dakar, and the Federation existed from 1895 until 1960. The card is in good condition, but shows some edge wear. No. 36.
